Most Scottish basket hilts have well-formed steel guards  pierced with decorative shapes, the blades are usually well tempered imported German types and on swords of quality the wooden grip is covered in shark skin. The basket hilt broadsword continued to develop in Scotland and is still in use today as the dress sword of the Scottish military regiments.
