The original plaid was simply the end of a long piece of tartan worn over the shoulder and chest. This modern interpretation is no less impressive, and now rather than a practical feature, it has become a ceremonial accessory.
Worn over the shoulder and held in place by a brooch, the mini fly plaid should be worn for fully formal events like weddings, clan gatherings and graduations. The fabric should be in the same tartan as your kilt.
