Irish Sword (Museum Quality)

This Irish short sword was the perfect secondary weapon for the Irish gallowglass who with their great two-handed swords, and backed up with their lightly armed retainers known as the Kern, achieved distinction in the mid-1500s as ferocious mercenary fighters. These swords were particularly advantageous in close combat as they were much easier and lighter to wield than a large two-handed type, which was of more use at the beginning of a battle.

This sword displays distinctive features unique to Irish swords, such as a hollow ring pommel, and cruciform shaped guards decorated with a cut out "E" shape.  No sheath.
