The sash is a length of fabric, usually longer than a regular scarf and often secured with a pin or brooch. It is an easy way to enhance your evening look when worn with a dress at a Ceilidh, Burns Supper, wedding or other formal event.
It is traditionally worn over the right shoulder (with some exceptions eg, Clan Chief’s wife), but there are no hard and fast rules these days - it is now often worn on the side that allows the dominant hand to move freely.
Here are three options for styling your sash:
1. Drape the sash over one shoulder, then pin with a brooch on the opposite hip. The ends may be even, or with one longer than the other.
2. Position the sash under one arm and draw the back section over the opposite shoulder. Drape the front section over the same shoulder and pin with a brooch.
3. Drape the sash over one shoulder then knot it at the waist on the opposite side. Pin a brooch at the shoulder if you wish.
