Background to the White Cockade:
During the 1745 Jacobite uprising, the Bonnie Prince plucked a white rose and placed it on his bonnet as a symbol of rebellion, starting the tradition among Jacobite supporters of wearing circular knots of white ribbon on their hats. Supporters of the Hanoverian monarchy used a black cockade.
